How to sew lace shorts-style panties yourself – pattern for six sizes and tutorial

To sew these delicate panties, the author recommends using elastic lace with four-way stretch—along the grain, across the grain, and diagonally.

The lace should be at least 14 cm wide and 2 m long. You will also need 2 m of elastic.

For the inner gusset, prepare a natural cotton fabric (or one with minimal synthetic fibers). You will need 45 cm by 40 cm.

The pattern for sizes 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, and 50 is provided to scale. Print your size using the scale square as a guide.

Cut out all the pieces and start sewing.

Fold the main panty piece in half with the right sides together and sew with an overlocker. Press the seam, then press it to one side. Hide the thread tails and add bar tacks.

Calculate the stretch factor for the elastic. To do this, measure the top waist edge and subtract 10%.

Next, divide the waist and the elastic into four equal parts and mark them. Pin the elastic to the right side of the waistline at these marks. This will ensure even tension of the elastic.

Sew with an overlocker stitch or a zigzag stitch if preferred. Press the seam.

Fold the elastic to the wrong side and sew with a zigzag stitch along the right side.

Cut the two gusset pieces along with the scalloped edge, as the scallop is the best guide for pattern symmetry. Place the pieces right sides together and, after ensuring symmetry, trim the scallop, leaving a 5 mm seam allowance. Sew with an overlocker. Press, then press the seam allowance to one side.

Next, place the lace gusset and the cotton jersey gusset with wrong sides together. Baste them.

Measure the length of the gusset and subtract the elastic stretch factor. Divide the gusset and the elastic into four equal parts. For an even fit, secure the elastic to the right side of the lace using the markings.

Sew with an overlocker or a zigzag stitch if preferred. Remove the basting and press. Fold the elastic to the wrong side and sew with a zigzag stitch along the right side. Press and trim the thread tails.

Overlock the back and front edges of the gusset. Press and hide the thread tails.

Pin the lace back piece to the back of the gusset. The scallop should overlap the gusset edge by 1.5 cm. Sew a zigzag stitch along the gusset edge first, then turn the work and secure the scallop with a stitch. This ensures the lace pieces are securely attached. Repeat the process to attach the front of the gusset to the front lace piece.

All that remains is to press the panties.

P.S. If you have elastic lace with a scalloped edge that is 14-15 cm wide, you won't need to sew elastic onto the waist. However, be careful to ensure the lace pieces fit within the width.
