How to sew a dropped-shoulder dress — free patterns and tutorial
I offer an accessible tutorial on sewing a sheath dress, an eternal classic. This model features a dropped short sleeve. For this dress, it is best to use lightweight suiting fabrics, preferably with added elastane to ensure a proper fit.
The ready-made patterns are available for size 44 (bust=88 cm, waist=68 cm, hips=96 cm), size 54 (bust=108 cm, waist=88 cm, hips=116 cm), and size 64 (bust=128 cm, waist=108 cm, hips=136 cm).
You will need fabric, fusible interfacing, a zipper, thread, and sewing supplies.
## You need to cut:
- back bodice - 2 pieces;
- front bodice - 2 pieces;
- back waistband - 2 pieces;
- front waistband - 1 piece on the fold;
- back skirt - 2 pieces;
- front skirt - 1 piece on the fold;
- back neckline facing - 2 pieces;
- front neckline facing - 1 piece on the fold;
- armhole facings for front and back — 2 pieces each, 4 pieces total.
Include 10-15 mm seam allowances for all edges, and 30-40 mm for the hem.
Interface all facings.
## How to sew
Stitch the darts/pleats on the front bodice piece on the right side. Press them towards each other in pairs.
Stitch the darts on the front and back skirt pieces. Press them towards the center lines of the pieces.
Place the back waistband right sides together with the back bodice and skirt pieces, matching the control marks.
Stitch, finish the edges, and press the seam allowances towards the waistband. Do the same for the front pieces.
Optionally, you can topstitch the waistband on both sides.
Finish the center back edges and install the zipper. Stitch the remaining part of the center seam, leaving a slit at the bottom.
Place the front and back facings right sides together and sew the shoulder seams. Press the seam allowances open. Finish the bottom edges of the facings. Baste the facing to the neckline, right sides together. Make sure the shoulder seams align. Stitch the facing with a 10 mm seam allowance. Notch the seam allowances and trim the corners.
Turn the facing out, press the seam allowances towards the facing, and topstitch on the right side 1 mm from the seam line.
Turn the facing inside out, straighten the corners, and press.
Place the front and back armhole facings right sides together in pairs. Stitch the shoulder and side seams, then press the seam allowances open. Place the facings against the armholes, right sides together, ensuring the side and shoulder seams align. Stitch.
Turn the facing out, direct the seam allowance towards the facing, and topstitch 1 mm from the seam line.
Press the sleeves and secure the facing folds by hand with a few stitches at the side and shoulder seams.
Finish the vent, then fold and stitch the hem.
A classic is a classic, no matter where you are. )) Based on this pattern, you can sew a dress with slight variations. For example, don't do these stitched pleats. If you use a patterned fabric, the pleats won't be visible at all. And the sewing will definitely be simplified.
