How to start sewing without getting discouraged: tips for beginners

I remember myself 8 years ago: a simple household sewing machine, a gift from my husband for my birthday, a few spools of thread, and an irrepressible desire to create. In practice, my enthusiasm didn't last long – about a month, and then I cooled off.

Today, I sew successfully, not only for my family but also on commission. Looking back, I want to give a few tips to those who want to dedicate a part of their life to sewing but are afraid of making mistakes. 😉

Don't rush into complex projects – start with basic models! If you start by trying to sew a designer dress, for example, you risk not only getting confused but also giving up entirely. Try sewing kitchen towels, an eco-bag, or a tote bag for shopping first:

My second piece of advice is not to rush into working with "difficult" fabrics. By this, I mean any thin, slippery, or fraying materials – chiffon, silk, satin, organza. It is also difficult to handle pile fabrics like velvet and fuzzy knits. I found elastic fabrics, lace, and sequined fabrics particularly challenging, and to be honest, I am still afraid to work with leather and fur. 🙂 For the beginning, prefer cotton fabrics, linen, and calico – they are easy to cut, do not slip, do not stretch, and do not fray. Once you have mastered them, move on to working with wool and blended fabrics. And one more thing – don't rush to work with fabrics that have a large print, as even an experienced seamstress can find it difficult to match such a pattern correctly.
