At first glance everything seems clear: stockinette stitch and garter stitch, but I can't figure out how the armhole is shaped? It looks like the collar is also knit in the round from the neckline 😕? Everything you were told about the technique and yarn consumption is correct. I will add to the pattern. It seems to me, judging by the photo, that it is quite simple here. The main piece is knitted as a single rectangle - from ribbing to ribbing.
I tried to draw it.

Let's start from the bottom, for example. First, we calculate the knitting gauge, measure the volume, and cast on the required number of stitches. Then - the ribbing, after it - stockinette stitch. You can narrow the silhouette by switching to thinner needles or by making decreases - whichever you prefer. Then - garter stitch. I think the neckline here is rectangular, judging by how it stretched under the collar. If desired, you can slightly round the corners. Then - everything in reverse order - garter stitch, stockinette stitch, ribbing. It turns out there are no shoulder seams at all - and that is the impression created in the photo.
The next stage is knitting the sleeves. Pick up stitches along the sides for the size of the armhole and knit in a straight piece to the desired length. First in garter stitch, then in stockinette stitch, finishing with ribbing. The sleeve turns out with a dropped shoulder, straight, without tapering towards the wrist. Again, in the photo, it is exactly like that. Then the second sleeve is done similarly.
Then we fold the piece in half and sew the sleeve and side seam on each side. The collar can be knitted last, or, if you prefer, before sewing the seams. Something like that...))
