Help with backpack repair

The seams on my backpack have come apart like this. I had a seamstress friend fix it a few years ago, but I can't take it for repairs right now. I only have a needle and thread. Is it possible to sew the top back to the patch, or should I take it to a professional? I have zero sewing experience.

If I understand correctly, the straps are holding up fine? Only the top seam has come apart? To restore it to a more or less functional state, you need to add a patch, otherwise, it will just tear again. You need a rectangular piece of durable fabric, preferably not too thick, so it's easier to sew. The length should be from one backpack strap to the other (that's the scale of the problem as I see it in the photo). The width should be enough to guarantee it covers the tear. To make it look decent, you could make the patch the same width as the top webbing, extending over the seam. Then, sew the patch on by hand. You need to make at least four lines of stitching: one along the tear and one along each edge of the patch. It's best to use a "backstitch"—it mimics a machine stitch and is very strong. Here is a video.
