Hello! I have a sweater that is too big. I want to take it in at the sides and shorten it, but everywhere I read that knit fabric will unravel no matter what. Is that true? Can I finish a knit sweater without a serger?

I can recommend you watch this tutorial; they are taking in a dress here, but the principle is the same.
As for the serger, I took this approach: after sewing the seams, I reinforced them with a strip of fusible interfacing and then finished the edges with a zigzag stitch. It holds up perfectly. Nothing has unraveled, even after washing.
