Fringed, Embroidered, and Painted Pillows: Creating a Unique Interior
Adding homey comfort and beauty to a bedroom or living room is easy with accessories like decorative pillows. Today, we'll try making them in a boho style—with fringe, embroidery, or paint. For pillows, it's best to choose natural fabrics like linen, cotton, or light-colored burlap.
What else you need for sewing sofa pillows:
- Thread matching the pillowcase or white thread. You can use yarn from unraveled items, but it will need to be straightened over steam first.
- Cardboard from shoe boxes.
- Darning thread or other suitable embroidery thread.
- Fabric paints.
How to make fringe for a pillow
Cut rectangles out of cardboard and use a utility knife to make a window in the center. You need to make as many templates as the number of fringe strips you intend to use.
Wrap each cardboard strip tightly with several layers of thread. Then, sew strictly down the center using a sewing machine with the smallest stitch length.
Use scissors to cut the fringe along the sides and remove the cardboard.
How to use fringe to decorate pillows
On the cut-out pillowcase (front side), draw the pattern along which you will baste the fringe strips. They can be arranged in a design or parallel to each other.
Stitch them down with a sewing machine.
You can complement the piece by painting it with fabric acrylics.
Or add embroidery using darning thread with decorative stitches.
You can also get original pillows without extra decor by sewing on several rows of handmade and store-bought fringe in similar shades.
