How to Sew a Pizza Pillow for a Child’s Bedroom

This archive project makes a decorative pizza-shaped cushion for a child’s room. It is not a safety-tested toy or an item for an infant sleep space. If a child uses it, supervise use; secure every seam and appliqué, with no loose small parts. Keep needles, scissors, and the sewing machine out of children’s reach.

You can make this soft, cheerful cushion from old T-shirts, scarves, shirts, or other fabric scraps that work together in colour and texture. Make one slice, or sew several slices into a larger piece.

Pattern and materials

For one cushion, cut two yellow triangles with 30 cm sides, one yellow strip measuring 62 × 15 cm, and two brown strips measuring 32 × 15 cm and 32 × 8 cm. For the decoration, use black, white, and red fabric scraps. You will also need suitable cushion stuffing, such as polyester batting or fibrefill.

Sewing the cushion

Fold the yellow fabric in two layers, cut the triangles, and gently round the lower edge.

Sew the long yellow strip to the triangle, then attach the brown strip along the lower edge to form the side panel.

Sew the second triangle to the shaped piece, leaving an opening for turning it right side out.

Fill the cushion and close the opening neatly with a blind stitch.

Adding the crust and decoration

Cut a narrow strip of brown fabric, fold it in half lengthwise, and stitch it.

Turn the strip right side out and stuff it lightly. Close the opening, then hand-sew it around the curved edge of the pizza to make a soft crust.

Cut eyes and a mouth from the remaining fabric, and semicircular tomato pieces from red fabric. Hand-sew all of the details as appliqués.

Adjust the size as you like, or sew a miniature textile version for dolls or pretend play. Before giving the cushion to a child, check again that the stuffing and every decorative detail are securely enclosed.
