How to sew a summer kaftan dress – ready-made pattern and instructions

Cutting and sewing this dress is very simple thanks to the extremely straightforward pattern.

It is also versatile – it can be worn as both a dress and a tunic. The length of the garment can be adjusted as desired.

The ready-made pattern is available for sizes S (34-36); M (38-40); L (42-44); XL (46-48).

The length of the dress along the center back line is 88 cm.

## Materials needed for the dress:

• main fabric – 1.9 m required for a width of 1.4 m;
• fusible interfacing;
• tassels 4 cm long – 2 pcs.

## Pattern

Draft the pattern according to the required sizes based on the drawing.

## How to sew

Cut out the pieces with 10 mm seam allowances around the entire perimeter. When cutting, position the neckline facing, belt, and drawstring pieces along the grainline of the fabric.

Reinforce the areas for the buttonholes on the front piece with fusible interfacing.

Stitch the shoulder seams of the front and back pieces.

Sew the front (diagonal) edges of the neckline facing together to form a ring. Start and end the stitching at the seam lines, leaving the allowances free.

Clip the neckline seam allowances at the corner in the center front. Finish the neckline edge with the facing. Trim the seam allowances to 5-7 mm and edge-stitch onto the facing.

Press the free longitudinal edge of the facing to the wrong side. Turn the facing to the inside and stitch its inner fold along the neckline. Press to set the facing in the correct position along the neckline.

Finish all edges of the dress by folding them over and stitching.

Place the front and back pieces with wrong sides together and baste along the side seams.

Make buttonholes on the front piece at the drawstring level according to the markings. These buttonholes are for the belt.

Press the edges of the drawstring casing to the wrong side. Stitch the transverse edges of the casing. Mark and then stitch the casing onto the front and back pieces from the wrong side.

Fold the edges of the belt to the wrong side and press. Fold the belt in half with the wrong side inside and stitch along the edges. Thread the belt through the casing via the buttonholes. Secure it at the center back on the wrong side with a few stitches to ensure it does not slip out of the casing.

Sew the tassels onto the ends of the belt.
