Calculate a Cast-On Stitch Count for a Men’s Knit Hat

In the men’s hat tutorial, the maker knits 2 × 2 ribbing first, then switches to a pattern of 6 knit and 2 purl stitches. Before casting on, measure your swatch gauge and check that the chosen stitch count works for both repeats.

Measure the Gauge

Knit a 2 × 2 ribbing swatch with your chosen yarn. The source instructions say to moisten it, let it dry, and stretch it slightly before measuring. Count the stitches across 10 cm in the center of the swatch, excluding edge stitches. The maker’s example has 22 stitches, or 2.2 stitches per centimeter.

Match the Stitch Count to the Pattern

Measure the head circumference. For the example of 56 cm, the calculation gives 56 × 2.2 = 123.2 stitches. You cannot cast on a fraction of a stitch, so choose a count that fits the pattern repeats. The 2 × 2 ribbing repeats every 4 stitches and the 6 × 2 pattern every 8; a multiple of 8 works for both. The maker chooses 120 stitches for the source hat. Before using that count for your own hat, check the calculated circumference: 120 ÷ 2.2 ≈ 54.5 cm, about 1.5 cm less than the 56 cm head measurement. This result is specific to that swatch; recalculate for your own yarn.

Check the Cast-On

Write down your chosen stitch count and repeat arrangement. With 120 stitches in the source model, the maker works 2 × 2 ribbing for 12 rows, then the 6 × 2 pattern for 30 rows.
