Making a Christian Dior-Style Necklace
Every crafter can hit a creative slump, and it's really hard to find inspiration for making something new and interesting. In moments like these, you can "borrow" ideas from famous designers and couturiers. The first time I saw a necklace like this in the Christian Dior and J. Crew style, I realized this was exactly the accessory I'd been missing.
To make a necklace like this, we'll need:
- beads on plastic strands;
- a headband with a fabric base;
- sewing supplies.
If you don't have beads like these, you can make them yourself. To do this, take a strong thread and string beads onto it, alternating with clear seed beads. This trick adds a touch of luxury and sparkle to the finished piece.
First, decide how long you want the necklace to be, and cut strips of beads based on that. Each next strand should be a little shorter, keeping in mind that we'll be sewing the strips on folded in half. For the back section, cut strips of the same short length.
Sew the beads on from the front side. Sew securely and firmly, so our necklace doesn't come apart at an inconvenient moment. Tuck all the knots away on the wrong side. I recommend sewing the beads along the top edge of the headband, to create the impression that the beads are draped over the edge. It's best to sew the beads starting from the edge, moving toward the center, where you'll sew on the smallest strips. Then move toward the other edge, sewing on longer strips with each step.
Since the inside lost some of its appeal during sewing, you can decorate it with satin or lace ribbon, or a strip of fur.
And that's it — our expensive-looking designer accessory cost us pennies!
Such a cool idea. I never would have thought you could create something like this yourself. A necklace like this would look great with a dress that has a V-neck, with a round neckline, and with different blouses (especially guipure lace ones) that have a short collar.
