Embroidery Roll – The Perfect Way to Store and Transport
Embroidered pieces have one flaw: once they are stitched, washed, and ironed, you don't always have the time or budget to take your masterpiece to a framer immediately. Most often, the works pile up in a safe place (read: in the closet), waiting for their moment to shine.
Naturally, large and medium-sized pieces have to be folded in half or even quarters. If such a stack sits for a couple of months or longer, deep creases form on the fabric, which are very difficult to steam out. Sometimes you have to soak the work all over again. The same applies to transporting embroidery to a framing shop: you can't just fold it into an envelope, as it must be perfectly flat before being stretched into a frame.
I don't know who came up with such a simple and brilliant thing as an embroidery roll, but huge respect to them! 😍


The idea behind the roll is simple: it consists of two parts—an inner soft tube and an outer "quilt." The finished embroidery is wrapped around the tube and rolled up—simple, convenient, and nothing gets wrinkled.


What is the tube made of? There are several options: a piece of plastic or thermal insulation pipe, cardboard cores from paper towels or aluminum foil rolls, etc.


The tube frame is covered with fabric, under which you can place padding like interfacing. If it's a foam pipe, you won't need to add any extra padding. To me, this is the easiest option.

The outer "quilt" is simple to sew: a rectangular quilted piece with ties sewn in. Inside, there is a layer of thin batting. That's it!
For those who sew regularly, you can use a patchwork method—it's a great way to use up scraps of different fabrics.


I mainly store my unfinished projects in the roll: even after a couple of years of storage, they unroll and look perfect 👌





They just sew very thick rolls: when they are rolled into a tube, the embroidered fabric placed inside follows all the curves and doesn't get wrinkled. Although, how to transport such a roll is also unclear to me. Any imprecise movement or pressure from another object - and the structure will simply bend - if not lengthwise, then crosswise. It's nonsense, in general 🤭 The phrase "if you want something done right, do it yourself" fits 100% here 🙃
