Which hoop is best to use for embroidery? My secrets for using the EZ Stitch scroll frame

Hello again! I'm continuing to introduce you to the world of hoops for embroidery/sewing/beading—or whatever you do? =)

I'll tell you about a wonder frame called the EZ Stitch from American Dream Products. Yes, I agree it's not exactly a hoop, but more like a sewing frame. Still, it's important to show all the possible ways of securing fabric available on the market.

EZ Stitch scroll frames are a sturdy, rotatable wooden frame (you'll most often find oak for sale). I was fortunate to work on such a frame for a few days when I was in another city visiting a craftswoman I know.

Scroll frames use a no-basting system. You attach the fabric by the top and bottom. I straighten my fabric and create a straight line by folding it, then apply tape along that line for several rows up (the tape can be bought separately; it's ordinary fabric adhesive tape). This ensures even tension on the top and bottom.

Your fabric won't get damaged with a scroll frame since all of it is wrapped around the rollers. Also, your hands won't touch the fabric while you work, so it will stay clean. With the EZ Stitch you can stitch with both hands, which means you can embroider faster. In addition, your thread will run straighter, so the fibers will wear less.

Now, depending on the size of your project / frame rods, the setup can be heavy. You pay for this convenience with a total lack of portability. Clearly, there's no question of traveling with such a hand frame.
