How to Sew a Reusable Eco Bag
We all know that plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose. I won't lecture you on environmental protection, but I will offer you something that helps me not only contribute to saving the environment but also save money. I've developed my own method for sewing eco-bags, and I'm sharing it. 😉
So, to start, cut three pieces from sturdy fabric: the bag base 90 x 42 cm and two handles 10 x 50 cm.
For a more water-resistant version of the bag, you can also make your own waxed fabric before sewing.
Fold the thin strips in half lengthwise with the wrong side out, stitch along the long edge, and turn right side out.
Now for the large rectangle.
Finish all four edges with an overlocker or a sewing machine using a zigzag stitch.
Fold the large piece in half with the right side facing in. Sew the side (vertical) edges on the machine. Press the seams open well. You could finish them further, but I don't see the point. 🙂
Fold the short edges in by 1.5 cm, tucking the finished edge inside, and baste. Fold again by 2 cm and stitch on the machine.
Now for the handles. I keep it simple – I tuck the raw edges on the short sides inside, stitch them closed, and sew the handles into their proper place.
If you wish, you can sew on Velcro or come up with a closure. If you're feeling extra creative, you can decorate it with embroidery or appliqué. Such a bag will last you much longer than a disposable one, paying for its small cost within a week. 😉

I'll add from my own experience: you can sew bags for fruits and vegetables using almost the same principle. Cut out a rectangle of the desired length and width (I placed a regular plastic bag on folded cotton fabric, excluding the handles). The sewing process is similar, only you need to thread a drawstring through the top hem and not sew it shut completely. I didn't make handles - no need. It's a really cool thing, if you don't forget to take it with you. ;)
