How to Make a Denim Rug from Old Jeans

Every so often, a wardrobe needs clearing of old clothes. Jeans are a common candidate: some are out of style, some have been outgrown, and some are worn through. Instead of taking up shelf space, they can become a denim rug for a room or hallway. For a child’s room, first make sure that any pom-poms and other trim are securely attached.

As the photo shows, any denim garments can be used; matching shades are not essential. You can choose the rug’s size yourself, and even children’s clothes can make a small home accessory.

What you need for a rug about 65 cm across

• truncated-cone-shaped pieces cut from old jeans or other denim clothing, about 25 × 10 cm;
• yarn for pom-poms, such as yarn reclaimed from an old jumper or scarf;
• pom-pom trim or other decoration of your choice.

How to sew the denim rug

Make a paper pattern and use it to cut sunburst pieces from the trouser legs. Alternating light and dark elements looks effective. Arrange the strips right sides together as you assemble the rug.

Sew the pieces together one by one until they form a closed circle. Cut a backing from sturdy fabric to match the rug and baste it in place about 1.5 cm from the edge.

Make pom-poms of the desired size from knitting yarn. Sew them around the inner circle to fill the centre opening.

Turn under the outer edge, baste on a ruffle or trim, then stitch it with a sewing machine. You can also sew it by hand with strong thread.

Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter only on a suitable cutting mat, always directing the blade away from your hands and body. Follow your sewing machine’s instructions, keep fingers clear of the needle, and do not leave sharp tools unattended around children.

If you need extra slip resistance, choose a suitable non-slip underlay or place the rug where it will not create a slipping hazard. Do not rely on random lines of hot glue as a dependable non-slip solution.
