How to Make a Felt Christmas Tree Skirt

A Christmas tree skirt—also called a tree mat—is something many of us remember from childhood. In the past, people hid the tree stand under an ordinary bedsheet, shaping it into a snowdrift. Here is a new snowy version to sew: it is quick, simple, and much prettier! 😉

For this project, you will need:

• a large piece of felt
• sharp scissors
• a hot-glue gun and glue stick, or a needle and thread
• a pencil
• a petal template

An adult should handle the hot-glue gun; supervise children when they use scissors or sew.

Step-by-step tutorial

Start by cutting the circular base. Take a 1 × 1 m piece of felt, fold it into quarters, and cut a circular opening in the center with a diameter a couple of centimeters greater than the tree trunk. Then cut out the outer edge of the circle.

Cut a slit from the outer edge of the circle to the central opening, as shown:

You can decorate the slit with ribbon or flowers, although it is usually placed behind the Christmas tree where it will not be seen. 🙂

Next, cut out the petals. Choose any shape you like and make at least 100. They do not have to be petals—you could make snowflakes or hearts instead—and they do not have to be white. 😉

Assemble the petals into flowers. In my case, each flower had six petals: four on the bottom and two on top.

Glue the flowers to the base at their centers—or, better yet, sew them on by hand. You can decorate the stitching point with a bead.

You can add several rows of flowers or cover the entire skirt with them.
