Rotary Cutter for Patchwork – Essential Safety Rules

A rotary cutter is an incredibly useful accessory. It looks flashy, bright, and positive 🤩 And yet, it is a knife: sharp and therefore quite dangerous, as it easily cuts through several layers of fabric at once. How can you use it to cut quickly, neatly, and safely?

Rule #1: Always cut while STANDING to see the entire fabric area, and move the cutter from BOTTOM to top.

Rule #2: Keep your fingers STRICTLY on the ruler, without going over the edges, to avoid injury.

Rule #3: The cutter should be pressed firmly against the ruler and held PERPENDICULAR to the mat, without tilting to the side. Start the cutting motion before the blade touches the edge of the fabric (and finish the cut slightly BEYOND the edge of the material).

Rule #4: The piece being cut should be UNDER the ruler – if the cutter accidentally slips, you will only ruin the fabric scrap.

Rule #5: If the piece is long, do not move the ruler itself. Instead, move your fingers along it – this will prevent the tool from accidentally shifting.

Rule #6: Before using the cutter, always check that there are no pins left in the fabric – statistically, blades are most often damaged by hitting metal.

Rule #7: Choose high-quality rulers made of durable polymers with sufficient WIDTH – a tool that is too thin may not keep the cutter in the correct direction.

Rule #8: It is important to change the blade (disc) in the cutter in time. A sharp blade guarantees a neat and clean cut. Before replacing the blade, remember the sequence in which the screws are tightened and which side the blade faces.

Rule #9: After any use of the cutter, ALWAYS retract the blade. You can also engage the safety lock by pressing the button – these are mandatory safety rules, especially if there are children in the house.

And finally: it is advisable to keep 2 rotary cutters in your collection – 28 mm and 45 mm. The first one is more maneuverable and convenient for small details. The second one is useful for those who often cut long strips for sewing quilts and blankets 😉
