Seamless Mittens on 2 Needles: What Makes Them Different
Seamless mittens on 2 needles suit knitters who don't enjoy — or don't yet know how to — knit on a set of five needles. The original material states the advantage plainly: there's no need to sew the piece together, because the top and bottom halves are joined as you knit. Another feature of this design is a rounded top, which differs from the classic mitten shape.
The work starts with calculating stitches for the cuff. In the author's example this comes out to 44 stitches, which are then split into two halves: the top and bottom parts are knit separately. The cuff is worked in 2x2 rib, followed by the main pattern, where knit stitches swap places every other knit row to form a cable-like braid. Increases and decreases need to be worked carefully so the pattern doesn't get thrown off.
The key technical point is joining the pieces through the edge stitches. While knitting the top part, you pick up the edge stitch of the front piece, slip it onto the left needle, and knit it together with the stitch of the current row; at the end of the row you pick up the edge stitch again. The thumb is worked separately: for the right mitten you set aside the first 8 stitches, and for the left mitten the last 8. Работа начинается с расчета петель для манжеты. В примере автора получилось 44 петли, затем это число делится на две части: верхняя и нижняя часть вяжутся отдельно. Манжет выполняется резинкой 2х2, а после него идет основной узор, где в каждом втором лицевом ряду меняются местами лицевые петли для получения косички. Прибавки и убавки важно провязывать так, чтобы узор не сбивался.
Главный технический момент — соединение деталей через кромочные. При вязании верхней части захватывается кромочная передней детали, снимается на левую спицу и провязывается вместе с петлей ряда, а в конце ряда снова подхватывается кромочная.
