Types of interior dolls
Interior dolls are those not intended for children or play. They are most often handmade dolls created using various methods.
So, interior dolls can be:
- textile, most often called Tilda;
- DIY, BJD, or OOAK;
- made of polymer clay;
- ball-jointed;
- made using mixed media.
Each of these techniques requires its own set of tools. You will also need to master some new techniques and materials.
The easiest and cheapest way is to make Tilda-style textile dolls. You can find a huge number of doll patterns online, and all you need is fabric, fiberfill, and thread. Plus, basic sewing skills.
OOAK (One of a Kind) is a more complex and expensive way to make an interior doll. For this, you will need a base—this could be a ready-made doll like Barbie or Monster High. There are also DIY bases for sale, ranging from quite cheap ones on Ali to very expensive branded ones. This method is most often used to create famous characters from movies or anime, but original characters are also common. DIY doll customization can be simple—changing the hairstyle and outfit—or involve a complete transformation of facial features, body shape, wig, and eyes.
Creating a doll from polymer clay is somewhat similar to sculpting with clay and requires good sculpting skills. It takes time to learn. Most often, small figurines of various characters are made. The materials are relatively inexpensive, although if you are making a large doll, the costs will be proportional. In addition, polymer clay requires baking in an oven.
Ball-jointed dolls (BJD) are the most difficult to make. Moreover, high-quality materials are very expensive. Their production requires liquid porcelain and casting molds. This is very meticulous work.
Mixed media is used quite often for making dolls because it allows for a wide variety of results. Most often, the doll's body is sewn from fabric, while the hands, feet, and head are made from polymer clay.
