Doll customizing is a popular hobby. It allows you to express your creativity and can even become an additional source of income, as many people want a custom doll of their favorite character. At the beginning, artists simply repaint and redress dolls to create a specific look. Advanced artists completely change the factory doll's facial features, make new wigs, and sometimes even change the body, add extra joints, or create grotesque figures like mermaids. However, this hobby is not cheap. Even for the simplest customization, you will need a substantial set of tools.
To get started, you will need:
- coarse and fine-grit sandpaper for sanding plastic;
- craft and utility knives, scissors;
- a manicure drill or Dremel with various attachments;
- Mr. Super Clear for base coating;
- acrylic paints and dry soft pastels;
- sewing tools;
- brushes and sponges for painting;
- polymer clay;
- acrylic varnish, matte and glossy;
- PVA glue, rubber cement, and super glue.
This is just the minimum set that will be useful for almost every project. Naturally, you will also need hair, materials for wigs, clothing, shoes, and accessories. And, of course, you will need a doll—Monster High, Barbie, or Blythe. BJD dolls are sold separately. These are dolls specifically designed for painting. There are also various head, hand, and body molds from which you can assemble a doll yourself. The prices for such dolls are higher than for regular ones. There are also very expensive brands that specialize specifically in BJD dolls. The price of one such doll can reach up to 10,000 hryvnias.
