An Alternative to Basting
Basting is an essential part of sewing that shouldn't be neglected. However, in autumn and winter, we often use complex materials that are sensitive to needle punctures and basting. For example, faux leather (leatherette), rainwear fabric, vinyl, and others. When working with thick and dense materials, basting becomes very difficult, and even with a thimble, it is hard to make hand stitches.
But there is a way out; there are several alternative ways to replace basting.
## Binder clips Thanks to their various sizes, these clips can be used even with the heaviest and thickest materials. They do not leave marks and securely hold the fabric together.
## Paper clips An excellent option for working with fabrics that are sensitive to punctures (or rather, where those punctures would be difficult to hide later).
Important! When working with thin and delicate fabrics, you need to be extremely careful and cautious to avoid leaving marks.
## Fine pins It is important to use them specifically within the seam allowances, especially when dealing with delicate materials. But if you are just starting to sew and the fabric does not allow for basting, gather the fabric and use fine pins without heads.
Ha, I have an even simpler method! ;)
I use 6 mm wide adhesive tape (anyone who does patchwork or quilting surely knows what it looks like). Essentially, you need to stick the tape to the left of the seam allowance, i.e., right next to it (so the adhesive doesn't get under the needle), remove the protective layer, and attach the second piece. After sewing, remove the adhesive layer - you need to get the hang of it, but soon you'll be removing it in one strip in seconds. :)
