Patchwork quilting: what to use instead of paper and fabric foundations?
Classic patchwork implies buying special fabrics that are easy and pleasant to work with. Nevertheless, many makers create gorgeous panels from leftover fabrics of varying composition and thickness.
Even old T-shirts and knitwear are used, and sewing without a backing is very difficult. What to do in this case? To assemble a block, patches are sewn onto PAPER or FABRIC FOUNDATION according to a given pattern. At the same time, some difficulties may arise:
- An extra layer of fabric adds weight to the item, especially for a patchwork quilt with batting (sintepon).
- Fabric consumption increases.
- When working with paper, the foundation must be carefully removed, which takes quite a lot of time.
What to do in such cases and what can replace a fabric or paper foundation? A great option is viscose cleaning cloths, for example, these.
A roll contains 100 pcs, each cloth measures 20 by 20 cm, price approximately - 50 UAH. This is a very economical option — one roll is enough for a large item. Moreover, this kind of foundation is very lightweight, stitches well, doesn't stretch during work and doesn't need to be removed.
Items sewn from blocks on a viscose foundation can be washed at 40°C, so they are suitable not only for panels and wall art, but also for practical items — bags, pillows and even large patchwork quilts/bedspreads.
