How to Sew a Fabric Drawstring Bag with a Window

Boxes are not always convenient for storing small items: they take up space and may not last long. A fabric bag with a transparent window can make the contents easy to see. It is also a useful way to use small fabric scraps left over from sewing clothes. Here are a few simple design ideas.

• Fabric scraps, sized for the bag you want to make.
• Tulle, organza, guipure lace, or another sheer fabric; an old sheer curtain can work.
• Lace for decoration, if desired.
• Cord or trim.
• Beads or large cord ends.

If the bag could be within a child’s reach, do not use cords, drawstrings, beads, or cord ends; choose another closure. Sew the transparent window securely into the bag and stop using it if the seams or window material are damaged. An adult should use the scissors, needle, and sewing machine.

How to Sew the Drawstring Bag

Cut a rectangle to your measurements. Fold up the lower edge by 8 cm. Cut a window of the desired width from sheer fabric.

Sew the back panel, transparent window, and upper panel together, then finish the seams.

Add scalloped lace along the lower seam. You can also use trim or ribbon.

Turn the bag inside out and sew the side seams, stopping 8 cm below the top edge. Make a double fold for the drawstring casing.

Thread two cords through the casing openings in opposite directions, add a bead, and knot the cord ends.

The bag can have a different design, for example, several windows.

Or it can have one round opening with a transparent insert.
