Common mistakes when making visors
Some typical mistakes can occur when making visors.
For example, look at the drawings below. The center one shows a visor made correctly and neatly, while the adjacent drawings show execution errors.
## Mistake in selecting the insert
In the right-hand drawing, you can see that the visor seems to turn the headband inside out, disrupting its line. This happens with plastic that is too rigid. In the past, during times of shortages, any available materials were used for inserts. However, now it is quite possible to find an acceptable option for any model.

## Mistakes in seam allowances
In the left-hand drawing, you can see that an overly puffy headband overlaps the visor. This happens if the seam allowances set for the edges of the outer headband are incorrect. The upper part of the headband should be wider than the lower one. This makes it possible to fold over the edge of the upper part of the visor and headband, and shift the stitching to the lower part.
At the same time, if the upper visor is made too wide, puckering will form along the outer edge of the visor when stitching. And if the outer headband turns out to be too wide, a bubble will form above the visor.
When making patterns, it should be taken into account that the crown or headband is usually stitched to the visor with a slight ease—from 3 to 10 mm (depending on the type of material and the length of the visor). This will help prevent the formation of transverse folds on the crown or headband and achieve a more natural fit of the piece.
Sometimes a cap ends up with a slight overlap of the headband onto the visor at the center of the pieces. To prevent this, the outer headband should be cut with a cutout along the lower edge line. In the drawing below, the cutout line is marked in red. The height of the cutout at the center front is made from 4 to 7 mm (depending on the thickness of the material).





Ready-made caps sometimes have an overlap on the visor. Berets are my weakness, but I don't dare to sew one myself, precisely because of the visor. It turns out that a beret should hold its shape anyway, not be tight-fitting, but not hang over the visor either. I think it's worth trying to sew one out of scrap fabric to get an idea of the final version.
