This master class shows how to sew thin footies from stretch knit fabric: take three foot measurements, draft a simple pattern directly on the fabric, shape the toe, cut a finishing binding, sew the sole, remove an extra 2 cm at the front, and finish the opening with binding.
BeginnerFreeThe result is a pair of lightweight thin footies made from stretchy knit fabric. You can sew them from fabric scraps or repurpose unwanted knit garments.
Measure the foot length, the foot circumference above the toes, and the instep height — the height of the closed toe section.
Fold a suitable stretch knit fabric in half. Cut two pieces for the pair.
The pattern is drawn directly on the knit fabric using the foot measurements.
On the folded fabric, cut 2 pieces: the width of each piece equals the foot circumference, and the length equals the foot length.
Fold each piece lengthwise with the fold at the top. Mark the instep height and a 2 cm cutout depth.
To keep the knit fabric from slipping, pin the layers before cutting.
Round the toe slightly and shape the front of the footie up to the instep line.
Cut a 4 cm wide binding strip from the main fabric or a contrasting fabric.
The sewing itself takes only a few straight operations.
Sew the lower part of the footie with a straight stitch and finish the edge.
At the front of the footie, remove 2 cm: sew a correcting seam, trim the excess, and overcast the edge.
This prevents the footies from looking like long elf slippers.
Sew the binding into a ring, overcast the edge, baste it to the opening, stitch it, turn it to the wrong side, and sew it down.
Check that the binding is sewn evenly, the raw edges are finished, and both footies fit the foot the same way.
You can sew the footies from unwanted knit garments or small scraps of stable stretch fabric.
Use contrasting fabric for the binding if you want the edge to stand out.

The layers of knit fabric slide and the pieces come out uneven.
The stretch fabric was not pinned before marking and cutting.
Fold the fabric evenly and pin the layers before marking and cutting.
You need foot length, foot circumference above the toes, and instep height.
The source uses a 2 cm cutout depth for all sizes.
The finishing binding is cut 4 cm wide.
