How to Make a Key Holder from a Cardboard Box

A key holder is an essential home accessory that helps keep things organized and creates a unique interior. Making such functional wall decor yourself is easy. I suggest making a key holder from a cardboard box.

This option requires no expense and takes very little time, plus it is a great way to get kids involved in a creative project.

What You Will Need

1. Cardboard box.
2. Single-ply paper napkins.
3. PVA construction glue.
4. Hot glue.
5. Spackle.
6. Acrylic paints.

How to Make the Key Holder

Cut 2 rectangles measuring 25 by 15 cm out of the cardboard and glue them together using PVA glue. Do the same with two narrower cardboard strips measuring 25 by 5 cm. Glue the narrow strip onto the wide one, aligning the top edge.

Cut out small houses of different heights and shapes, glue them together in pairs, and attach them side by side onto the prepared key holder base using hot glue. For each little house, make a roof from cardboard strips folded in the center. Use small pieces of cardboard to make "windows" and a fence for each house, decorating them to your own taste.

Dilute the PVA glue with water 1 to 1, tear the napkins into pieces, and use a brush to glue them across the entire surface of the key holder.

Once the decoupage has dried, apply thick spackle and also let it dry completely.

Attach the hooks along the pre-marked lines using hot glue.

All that's left is to paint the key holder with acrylic paints.

To hang the piece on the wall, glue a metal hook to the back using hot glue. You can also mount the key holder with small nails and paint over the nail heads with acrylic paint.
