Decorate Your Home with Magical Floating Cups

Step 1

Floating cups are a type of topiary believed to attract happiness and good fortune into the home. To bring harmony and perfect calm to your home, you do not have to go to a store and buy a “cup of abundance.” Make a floating cup at home.

To create this topiary, you need:
• a cup and saucer; choose the lightest possible tableware;
• Moment gel glue;
• thick wire or stiff cable;
• self-hardening plastic or a clay-like modeling compound;
• décor such as coins, flowers, candies, feathers, buttons, and more.

First, create the “floating structure” base. Bend a piece of wire, ideally about the height of two cups, as shown in the photo.

Place thermoplastic, such as Polymorph, in hot water for 20–30 minutes; skip this step if using modeling compound. During soaking, the thermoplastic becomes soft and pliable. Cover the base with the softened plastic and shape it. If you do not use all the plastic at once, put it back into hot water and work with it again.

While working, constantly test-fit the blank. Pay particular attention to the cup rim. Make a small stepped ledge to hold the structure in place.

Take Moment gel glue and attach the blank to the cup and saucer. Follow the exact instructions on the glue package. Leave the construction for 5–6 hours for the glue to set completely. Hold it in position with soft objects while it cures.

Now begin the most creative stage: decorating. Use absolutely any decorative elements for these cups, whether store-bought or handmade. I had flowers, so I will glue them to the construction.

Attach décor with the same Moment gel glue and again leave it for 5–6 hours to set. Start with large elements and gradually move to small ones; this makes it easier to create a harmonious composition.
