How much yarn to buy for a scarf? Making calculations
It is not always easy for beginners or even experienced knitters to decide: how much yarn to buy for a scarf? Yarn consumption for such a project can range from 100-300g, depending on several important parameters.

1. Yardage and thickness. If you are using medium-weight yarn (wool blend, acrylic, angora with cotton) with a yardage of 150-250m, you will need one and a half skeins for an average 150cm scarf. If you want to knit a long winter scarf, it will take about 250g. For patterns knitted with thin angora, which has a yardage of 400-450m, one skein will be enough, and you will even have some yarn left over for a hat.
2. Needle size. Every manufacturer indicates the appropriate knitting needle or crochet hook size on the yarn label. However, you might choose a very airy pattern that requires larger needles. In this case, yarn consumption will decrease by about 50g.

3. Pattern. Scarves with simple stitches will require less yarn compared to models made with cables or aran patterns. In the latter case, it is better to buy extra yarn for a winter scarf - at least 300g.
4. Embellishments. Women's and children's scarves are often decorated with long fringe or pom-poms, which will require an additional 30-50g of yarn.
After making all the calculations, you can get a rough idea of how much extra yarn to buy: two 100g skeins for an average autumn scarf and three for a long winter one.
If you are working with downy yarns, the separate guide on washing mink down and angora garments will help you test a swatch before calculating the final yarn amount.

I wanted to add a couple more words about men's scarves. They are usually no more than a meter long and are knitted with simple patterns, so one skein with a length of 250 meters is enough for an average scarf. Also, keep in mind your own knitting "style"; some people knit stitches very tightly, while others get an airy fabric from the same yarn.
