How to Wrap Round and Square Gift Boxes with a Scarf

Online stores often deliver items in plain cardboard boxes. To turn one into a nicely wrapped present, use these tips for wrapping a round or square box with a scarf or fabric square. Both ideas can come in handy.

Use a clean scarf or fabric square that is appropriate for the recipient and follow its care instructions. Keep elastic bands and long knotted fabric ends out of reach of young children.

Option 1: a round box

This can be anything from a cosmetics set to a box of chocolates.

Place the gift in the centre of the scarf. If the fabric has a right and wrong side, put the right side face down. Bring the opposite ends of the scarf together.

Secure the ends with a regular hair elastic.

Spread out the four ends of the scarf, then twist each one, wrap it around the base, and tuck the tip under the elastic.

Pull the last end through the elastic and spread it out to create a pretty leaf.

It is simple and looks lovely. You can use a plain or patterned scarf, or a piece of translucent fabric such as shimmering organza for a festive result.

Option 2: a square or rectangular box

Place the gift in the centre of the scarf, as in the first option. Fold the bottom edge and tuck it under the box. Fold the top edge into a point, then cover the top of the box.

Shape the sides of the scarf with your hands, as shown in the photo, and bring them towards the centre.

Tie a neckerchief-style knot with a flat centre.

Alternatively, simply tie the ends together and wrap each one around the centre to make an improvised handle.
