Every embroiderer's nightmare: what to do if your embroidery bleeds
It's easier to prevent a disaster than to fix one. Therefore, here are a few simple truths about how you should not handle your finished embroidery:
- use water that is too hot—30-35 degrees is enough to remove dirt and avoid potential color bleeding;
- use highly active laundry detergent—for gentle cleaning, it is better to grab a bar of soap (without whitening agents);
- scrub the embroidery vigorously or put it in the washing machine (even on a delicate cycle, yeah right)—the only thing allowed is to very gently rub soap suds into the fabric, and only from the reverse (!) side.
And regarding threads: DMC, Madeira, Anchor—use trusted manufacturers. "Surprises" from them are very rare. With hand-dyed threads, washing is like walking through a minefield: they almost always bleed, which is why they are used for small projects and handled very carefully so that a final cleaning is not needed.
If the disaster has already happened, grab a color-safe stain remover and follow the instructions. Didn't help? Take a deep breath and try an extreme but effective method. Pour 30 ml of ammonia into a liter of boiling water and submerge the embroidery. Wait 3-5 minutes, take the fabric out, rinse, and enjoy the result 😉

- использовать слишком горячую воду – 30-35 градусов будет достаточно, чтобы снять загрязнения и избежать возможной линьки;
- применять стиральный порошок повышенной активности – для бережного очищения лучше взять с полки мыло (без отбеливающего эффекта);

To be honest, I have never encountered such troubles. I can only sympathize with those who have been in such a situation.
The thing is, my grandmother taught me that before the main wash of an embroidered piece, you need to soak it for 15-20 minutes in cold water with salt and vinegar (a tablespoon of vinegar and the same amount of salt per 2-3 liters of water). After that, hand wash it in a soapy solution, and the water temperature should not exceed 30 degrees.
