Beading Needles – How to Choose and What to Look For?

To start, it is worth noting that all beading needles are uniformly thin along their entire length—without the usual thickening at the eye, as the needle must pass easily through tiny beads.

This leads to a number of challenges: beading needles are very difficult to thread. Therefore, you might need a needle threader.

Alternatively, look for a special needle with a split eye: the thread "falls" into it with a little pressure.

Needle size is another quest for the embroiderer. It is clear that everything depends on the size of the beads themselves, but which needle number fits which bead? After all, numbers usually vary from 4 to 16, where 4 is the thickest needle. A small cheat sheet is below 👇

Needle #10 - suitable for beads #7-8. Needle #11 - for #9-10. Needles #12 and #13 - for beads #12-13. Needles #15 and #16 - for #13-15.

From experience, I can say that the most popular beading needle is #12; it is practically universal and fits most types of beads 👌

At the same time, for bead embroidery, you can take a slightly thicker needle - #10. But for jewelry beads, look for needles #12-16.

In general, you should remember the ironclad rule: the higher the bead number, the thinner the needle should be.

If you plan to pass the needle through a bead twice, it is better to take one size smaller. Such needles are especially thin, so they often not only bend but also break—a spare beading needle will definitely not be superfluous.

The length of the needle does not affect the bead size at all. Why, then, are there long and short beading needles (the length range is from 4 to 12 cm)?

It's simple: the longer the needle, the more beads you can string at once. And that means the work will be done faster 😉

Sometimes a special spinner is recommended to go with these giant needles, but in my opinion, it is a useless device 👎
