A step-by-step Paper Piecing example: arrange fabric scraps directly on a paper pattern to create a precise geometric block.
Paper Piecing helps assemble a complex patchwork block accurately without losing the geometry of small pieces.
Start with the template
Mark the block design on paper. The fabric pieces do not need to be perfectly cut in advance: place them on the template with a little extra and form the accurate edge while sewing.
Sew the sections
Place each scrap on the paper pattern in sequence and sew along the marked lines. After every seam, check that the fabric covers the next area, fold back the seam allowance and press it.
When all sections are ready, trim the excess along the paper block. Join the sections to make a straight larger block for a quilt, wall hanging or cushion cover. For complex shapes such as a star, divide the drawing into segments and assemble each segment separately.
