OOAK Dolls – Basic Principles of Sewing Clothes

Step 1

Sewing doll clothes is very simple. You can use new fabric scraps as well as repurpose unwanted items.

For OOAK dolls, clothes are sewn using patterns. Naturally, they are as simple as possible, with no complex details or darts. You can find them in themed online communities. These patterns are made specifically for particular dolls—Bratz, Barbie, Monster High, etc. And based on these patterns, you can design a wide variety of garments—lengthening or shortening in places, widening a sleeve, or changing the collar. Some makers only make the garments that are visible, while others prefer to dress the doll completely—sewing underwear, stockings, corsets, etc. This is all up to the maker.

Step 2

However, when designing your doll's outfit, remember these basic principles:
• use stretchy fabrics as much as possible;
• inside seams are not overcast;
• garments should have as little bulk as possible;
• if the character's outfit has patterns, paint them onto the cut pieces or the finished garment with fabric paint to keep the pattern in proportion to the doll;
• you can also use paint to add shadows and creases to the outfit;
• sew all seams by hand;
• for any closures, use Velcro and ties, sometimes miniature snap fasteners;
• all closures go on the back; even if the character's outfit calls for a front closure, it is made decorative, and the actual closure will be on the back;
• if the character's outfit includes gloves, simply paint the hands the desired color with acrylics.

These rules are not strict or mandatory. After all, OOAK is a creative process, and you are free to use any techniques, materials, and tricks from your arsenal. The most important thing is the result.
