Neckline Finishing – How to Create a Dimensional Trim

What is important to keep in mind in this case? The neckline turns out thick, so be sure to calculate its size taking into account its very limited stretch. If the garment requires a narrower opening, plan from the start to sew using stretch stitches.

First, measure the circumference—the neckband will be approximately 10% smaller than this value. How wide should you cut the neckband piece? Base it on the finished width of the piece. Suppose you chose a finished height of 1.5 cm: 1.5 x 6 + 1.3 (for seam allowances) = 10.3 cm.

Step 3

Stitch the resulting piece along the short edges (remembering to include seam allowances for them as well) and press the seam open.

Step 4

Fold the future neckband in half and press.

Step 5

Meanwhile, spread out the garment's neckline so that it can be divided into 4 equal parts. Mark the corresponding points on both the garment and the neckband piece.

Step 6

Pin the neckband piece to the raw edge, carefully aligning all the marks.

Step 7

Stitch the seam, then press the seam allowance upward.

Step 8

Now do what gives the neckband that signature dimension: fold the edge of the piece inward, wrapping it around the seam allowance—together with the fold, it should cover the previously stitched seam. Press the fold immediately.

Step 9

To keep the construction from coming apart, secure it with clips.

Step 10

All that's left is to topstitch the folded edge from the right side 👍
