How to Sew a Neat Zippered Welt Pocket

Step 1

This little pocket will decorate any garment—but only if it is made neatly. As they say, "your handiwork should not show."

Step 2

There is nothing especially difficult about this operation; it simply requires care and precision.
Besides a zipper, you will need fusible interfacing and fabric for the pocket bags (you may use the main fabric).
So, mark the pocket positions. If there are two, make sure the lines are symmetrical.
Cut a strip of fusible interfacing and reinforce the fabric from the wrong side at the opening.
Cut the pocket bags: their width should equal the zipper length plus 4 cm, and their length should equal the length of your palm.
Finish the pieces around the perimeter.

Step 3

On the right side of the skirt, place one pocket bag right side down. Secure it with pins.
Sew a line around the marked pocket opening as a rectangle measuring 1 cm × the zipper length.
Carefully cut the pieces along the marking line, cutting diagonally toward each corner.
Turn the pocket bag to the wrong side. Baste it so the seam rolls slightly to the wrong side, then press.
Lay in the zipper and sew it with a basting stitch. Stitch the zipper 2–3 mm from the edge of the teeth.
Place the second pocket bag and stitch it to the first (1 cm seam allowance).

Your pocket is ready!
