How to Sew a Fine Moscow Hem

Step 1

The fine Moscow hem, or baby hem, is an edge finish used on delicate fabrics such as silk and chiffon. This hem is suitable for finishing the edges of scarves, wraps, and skirts.

Making a neat, beautiful hem takes some skill, but the result is well worth it.

Step 2

Use only specialty silk needles No. 55 or universal No. 60-65. First, make the initial fold 5-20 mm wide and press it; if the piece is cut on the bias, it is better to baste it as well.

Step 3

Stitch on your machine 1-2 mm from the fold. Choose the stitch length to your preference, but shorter stitches look more refined. Using sharp scissors, trim the seam allowance as close to the stitching as possible (1-2 mm).

Step 4

Fold the fabric under once more and press. Sew another line of stitching, trying to align it directly with the previous line. Done
