A simple way to alter short children's jeans by trimming the hems and sewing on cuffs from an old shirt.
BeginnerFreeChildren's jeans lengthened with sewn-on shirt cuffs.
Children grow quickly: clothes that fit with room to spare in fall may be too small by spring. To avoid buying your child a new pair of jeans, here is a simple way to lengthen them in about half an hour.
To alter the jeans, you will need:
jeans that have become too short;
cuffs from a women's or men's shirt;
basic sewing supplies.
This alteration does not require anything extra or drastic. If the lower part of the jeans has worn spots or creases, trim away the entire damaged section.
If there are no such flaws, remove only the turn-up. From an old denim or cotton shirt, cut off a cuff with a small seam allowance so it is easier to join to the leg opening. When using denim cuffs, you can cut them off right at the topstitching and sew them to the leg openings. The source does not give cuff dimensions or specify how to finish the joining seam.
If the jeans still have worn spots or small holes, you can decorate them with the same fabric used for the cuffs. This gives the alteration a more cohesive look and can help the jeans last longer.
