Elegant Nuno-Felted Stole: Wet Felting

You need only basic skills and affordable materials from a craft store. Follow this step-by-step guide to make a nuno-felted stole using wet felting.

What you need:

1. A silk scarf or scarf made of another lightweight material.
2. Lightweight fabric strips cut on the bias, 3–5 cm wide.
3. Felting wool.
4. Liquid soap.
5. A foam paint roller.
6. Mosquito netting.
7. Bubble wrap.

Instructions:

Step 1

Lay the scarf on bubble wrap and arrange strips of felting wool diagonally. Wet them generously with liquid-soap solution.

Place strips of silk fabric over the wool and press them down with your hands. The strips may be a single color or in a closely related color palette.

Cover the scarf with mosquito netting and rub the surface actively with your hand until a soapy film appears. This is the first wet-felting stage. Then use a soft foam roller to continue felting the stole without pressing too hard.

Once the wool fibers have penetrated the silk, carefully remove the mosquito netting.

Step 4

Roll the scarf together with the bubble wrap and roll it actively on the table for 5–10 minutes.

Remove the wrap, rinse the stole in clean water, shake it several times, and lay it on the table. Straighten the silk strips to create beautiful waves.

For a stole or scarf with a minimalist design, use wool matching the base fabric without ruffles of silk strips. The felting technique is the same; arrange the wool as a specific pattern or randomly across the stole.
