DIY Bow Tie: Step-by-Step Master Class

Step 1

Materials and tools:
• non-stretch suiting fabric 24x13 cm for the bow tie + 4x7 cm for the center band;
• fusible interfacing 24x13 cm;
• 50 cm elastic band;
• bra slider and hook;
• sharp scissors;
• a piece of chalk;
• sewing pins;
• ruler;
• sewing machine.

Master Class

Cut out the main and center band pieces. Fuse the main piece with interfacing.

Fold the main piece in half lengthwise with right sides facing, pin, and stitch 5 mm from the edge.

Turn the main piece right side out and press it with a warm iron so that the seam is centered on the inside of the future bow tie (I hope that makes sense 🙂 ).

Fold the pressed piece in half (matching the short sides) with the seam facing out, and stitch 5 mm from the edge.

Turn it right side out so the seam you just stitched is on the inside, and center it. Press.

Take the small piece for the center band. Fold it in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, and stitch 3 mm from the edge.

Fold lengthwise with the right side of the fabric facing out and stitch 3 mm from the edge. Press with an iron so the seam is centered in the back, just like with the main piece.

Fold the center band in half (matching the short sides) with the seam you just made facing out, and stitch 3–4 mm from the edge. Turn the center band right side out.

Pull the main bow tie piece through the center band and form the pleats.

For the strap, take the elastic band and thread it through the center band. Thread the slider on, pass it through the hook, and then thread it back through the slider from the opposite side (it sounds complicated, but you'll easily figure it out in practice. 😉 ). Sew the end down. Make a loop on the other end of the band.
