Cut both layers
Cut the required shell-fabric piece and a polyester-batting piece. Leave an allowance of at least 1 cm on the batting: it may draw in under the presser foot while sewing.
Secure the layers
Secure the pieces with pins or binder clips so the batting extends beyond the shell-fabric piece.
Stitch along the edge
