Bow Hair Ties: Sewing Accessories from Old Jeans

You can do more with old jeans than sew a bag, a pouch, or a chair cushion — you can also make original accessories with your own hands. I suggest using the smallest denim scraps to sew bow hair ties trimmed with lace.

You can make this accessory together with kids — girls will enjoy taking part in the work.

For denim bows, you'll need:

1. A piece of fabric measuring 8 by 9 cm.
2. A piece of lace, ribbon, or satin ribbon, 15 cm long.
3. Ready-made or handmade little flowers for decoration.
4. A seam ripper or a large-eyed needle.
5. Hot glue.
6. A hair tie.

The process:

Cut a rectangle from old jeans and use a seam ripper or a large needle to fringe the edges.

Fold the piece in half along its width, marking the center. Sew a basting stitch along the marked line and gather the fabric. Wrap the thread several times around the base and secure it on the wrong side.

Gather the ribbon or lace, close it into a ring, and sew it together by hand.

Glue the bow onto the hair tie with hot glue. For a secure hold, cut a strip of denim 1 cm wide and 5 cm long. Wrap it around the join with the bow and glue it down.

Glue on a lace rosette with hot glue, then a decorative flower on top.

Your hair tie is ready. Instead of a fabric rosette, you can decorate it with beads, colorful buttons, or pieces from old costume jewelry.
