In Step with Fashion – Decorating Hosiery with Embroidery

I personally prefer classic, casual styles and don't really like flashy things. So, I definitely couldn't wear bright socks with sandals. But my nieces convinced me that it's super trendy these days and time to start embroidering socks and stockings. Because plain is a terrible faux pas 🙃 After digging into this topic, I decided to save some ideas for applied embroidery on socks/leg warmers with visual examples of stitches on the forum. Just in case someone else is suffering from plainness 🤭

For a sock extravaganza, you will need narrow silk ribbons, sequins, embroidery floss, and beads. The fabric might not fit on an embroidery hoop, so be prepared to sew by hand.

To start, you can sketch a design with a pencil directly onto the fabric surface. Then there are options. For example, twist a thin ribbon into a cord and lay it along the drawing line, basting it with matching embroidery floss. Or "draw" a star with thread and weave the ribbon over and under the stitches to form a rose, as shown in the picture. Or simply use the French knot technique for gradient-colored ribbon.

Simple, quick, but effective designs can be made with ribbons by laying them out as "petals" using a backstitch.

Simple chain stitches also create a beautiful picture. Just like the "lazy daisy" stitch (the bottom one in the photo): it is one of my favorites.

And here are a few more stitch variations. I want to point out that you can make them not only with ribbons but also with a whole bundle of embroidery floss, without separating it into individual strands.

And here is how partial and shaded satin stitch can look in very small volumes.

For those who don't want to fuss with embroidery, I suggest experimenting with sequins, beads, large pearls, and sew-on crystals of all kinds. It might not be very practical, but it is striking. Just right for creative photos 😉
