Soap Additives for Scrub and Decorative Effects
This archival note lists possible additions for handmade soap. Use only materials that the supplier states are suitable for rinse-off cosmetic use, follow the manufacturer's usage limits, make a small test batch, and stop using the soap if irritation occurs. Ground coffee, shredded coconut, poppy seeds, pumice powder, rolled oats, and loofah are examples mentioned by the source. If using loofah, heat-treat it as directed and let it dry completely before use.
Dried cinnamon, herbs, and citrus pieces can be decorative, but plant material can discolour, degrade, or grow mould if it retains moisture. Use only fully dried, clean botanical material in a test batch. For shimmer, use cosmetic-grade glitter approved for rinse-off products; food glitter is not a substitute.
“Natural” does not automatically mean skin-safe. Use only cosmetic colourants and fragrance materials at supplier-stated rates. Clay, coffee or herbal infusions, henna, activated charcoal, and sea-buckthorn oil can affect colour, stability, shelf life, or skin tolerance.
I was recently given handmade soap with ground coffee. I loved it! I’m getting ready to try making something similar at home; I’ll buy ground coffee first, because I only have instant coffee at home. :)
