How to Clean a Natural Fur Coat at Home Safely

Winter is coming soon, so I decided to take out my fur coat to inspect and air it out. I rarely wear it, as it's easier and faster to run around in a down jacket.

It's a wolf fur coat, very warm. The quality of the fur is excellent. But, either it seemed to me that the fur has lost its look a bit or it really has... Are there any ways to clean it at home? I wouldn't want to use anything extremely chemical.

I remember from childhood that my grandfather used to refresh his fur vest with clean, dry snow (in freezing weather).
Also, here's an interesting thought: there is a real boom in dry shampoos right now, and buying them is not a problem - could you clean a fur coat with such a product?

If there are clearly visible dirty areas, you can try to clean them with sawdust (but not coniferous, because it contains resin!) or sand. Apply to the fur, rub without overdoing it, and shake off. You can repeat the procedure.

For wolf fur, rye bran also works well. The cleaning method is the same.

If you got a stain on the fur, you can clean it with high-octane gasoline. But only if the fur is dark, because a yellow stain will remain on white fur. You can wipe it with just gasoline, or you can make a paste of gasoline and starch. Apply it to the stain, leave it for 2 minutes, and remove with a clean wet sponge. Then dry everything and brush.

If such a stain needs to be removed from light-colored fur, the paste should be diluted with acetone or alcohol.

My rabbit fur coat has white inserts. Over time, they turned yellow. And not the whole fur, but just in patches ((
I removed the yellowing with a hydrogen peroxide solution (1 tablespoon per cup of warm water).

You can also dissolve one tablespoon of regular salt and half a tablespoon of ammonia in a cup of warm water. Dip a cloth in this solution, wring it out, and wipe the fur. Let it dry, then brush.

You can also wipe the fur with a shampoo solution (1 tablespoon per cup of water). Only use the foam, not the water. Whip it into a lather from the solution, pick it up on a sponge, and wipe. Leave it for five minutes and wipe with a clean sponge dampened with water. Dry and brush.

And another tip – all these products for short fur can be applied both with and against the grain. But if the fur is long, it is better to do it with the grain.

For white fur, there are personal cleaning methods. If we are talking about home remedies, these are talc, semolina, and starch. They will not only clean the fur but also remove unpleasant odors.

Apply any of these substances to the dirty area and distribute it between the fur with a brush. You can gently knead the fur with your hands, imitating washing. Then shake it, dusting off the talc (or semolina, starch). For heavy soiling, repeat the procedure. On clean fur, the falling starch will practically not change color.

To enhance the effect, you can pre-heat these cleaning agents in the microwave.
It is very important to shake out the remains of the 'cleaner' well afterward, otherwise, moths will definitely get into the fur coat.
