Stylish Crochet Scarf-Shawl: Step-by-Step Tutorial for Beginners

Just a little longer, and warm autumn sunshine and warmth will give way to clouds and rain. Alas, c'est la vie. Today, I suggest getting ready for the first chilly days and crocheting a lightweight scarf-shawl. The process is not difficult and quite enjoyable—just the thing while watching a TV show! 😉

To crochet this, prepare:
• Caron Cakes yarn in Buttercream or another worsted yarn (approx. 290 meters and 200 grams);
• tapestry needle;
• stitch marker;
• size 5 crochet hook;
• scissors.

The finished shawl measures 177x36 cm.

The piece is worked from side to side. At first, the stitch count increases in every 2nd row, and then gradually decreases at the same rate. Increases and decreases are worked on one side only. To avoid confusing where to make them, mark the spot with a stitch marker. Each row ends with 2 dc worked without chain stitches between them (see photo below as you crochet).

If you are using Caron Cakes yarn, pay attention to the order of shades in the cake to decide which end of the yarn is best to start from. You can also make tassels or fringe from any leftover yarn.

Instructions

Ch 9.

Row 1: 1 dc in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, 1 dc in the last ch. Turn.

Row 2: increase row – ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1), sk first 2 dc, 1 dc in first ch of ch-space, *ch 1, sk 1 dc, 1 dc in next skipped st*, from * to * to end of row, then additionally *ch 1 and 2 dc* in turning chain. Turn.

Row 3: ch 4, 1 dc in 1st ch-space, *ch 1, sk 1 dc, 1 dc in next skipped st*, from * to * to end of row, then additionally 1 dc in turning chain. Turn.

Alternate Rows 2 and 3 until you have worked 32 ch-spaces. The length at this point should be 89 cm. Finish by working Row 3.

Next is the second stage of crocheting.

Row 1: decrease row – ch 4, 1 dc in 1st st of ch-space, *ch 1, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in next skipped st*, from * to * to the 1st ch-space and remaining turning chain, ch 1, tr together into the next ch-space and increase stitch. Turn.

Row 2: ch 4, 1 dc in 1st ch-space, *ch 1, sk 1 dc, 1 dc in next skipped st*, from * to *, at the end additionally work 1 dc in turning chain, turn.

Alternate these two rows until 2 ch-spaces remain (including the skipped turning chain). Finish crocheting with the second row.

Cut the yarn, fasten off, and weave in the end.
