How to knit seamless footie slippers on two needles: calculation for a 23 cm foot, a 20 x 21 cm rectangle, a no-sew heel, gathered toe, and crochet edging.
BeginnerFreeYou will make footie slippers in garter stitch: the heel is closed without a separate seam, the toe is gathered with yarn, and the top is joined with a crochet hook and held in shape by the secured corner.
The author’s calculation depends on her knitting gauge: for a 23 cm foot, she made a piece 21 cm long and 20 cm wide. For another size, take your own measurements and check the fit.
The free yarn tail from the cast-on edge will be used to gather the toe, so leave extra length when casting on.
The base of the footie is a garter-stitch rectangle. The source calculation is for a 23 cm women’s foot.
Take 1 skein of soft yarn, No. 3 circular needles, two No. 3 double-pointed needles, a No. 2.5-3 crochet hook, and a tapestry or yarn needle. Choose the corner decoration separately.
In the example for a 23 cm foot, you need a piece 21 cm long, which equals 40 stitches in the author’s gauge. The footie width from the top edge, across the sole, to the other edge is 20 cm.
Keep the fitting principle, but recalculate the stitches using your own gauge and foot measurements.
Cast on 40 stitches and leave a long free yarn tail: it will be needed when shaping the toe.
Work every row in knit stitches, with no decreases or increases. Always slip the first stitch without knitting it and purl the last stitch so the edge forms an even chain. In the example, the finished rectangle measures 20 x 21 cm.
At the end of knitting, keep the rectangle stitches live: they are needed to form the heel.
The heel is formed by a specific stitch transfer and bind-off method, without sewing a separate seam with a needle.
Divide the knitting into two parts: 20 stitches on the right needle and 20 stitches on the left needle. Hold the needles parallel and transfer one stitch from the front needle, then one stitch from the back needle, alternating until all 40 stitches are on one double-pointed needle.
First knit the first 2 stitches together and return the resulting stitch to the needle. Then knit 3 stitches together each time, returning the new stitch to the needle after every step. When the row is closed, cut and hide the yarn.
After the heel, the toe is gathered with the long cast-on tail, and the free edge forms the top of the footie.
Thread the free cast-on tail into the needle. Mentally divide the edge into 3 sections of 13 stitches and pass the needle with yarn under 26 stitches in sequence, as shown in the photo.
Gather the fabric, shape the toe evenly, bring the yarn to the wrong side, and secure it.
You will have a free edge of 14 stitches. Fold it upward, try on the footie, and baste the edge with one or two stitches.
Work single crochet around the edge, catching the footie stitches at the same time. For the little points, make picots from 3 chain stitches.
When the corner is joined to the toe, continue edging the top while easing in the fabric slightly. Secure the corner with a bead, button, or a few stitches. Hide and trim all yarn ends.
Knit the second footie the same way, but mirrored.
After the first footie, check the length, width, and comfort of the corner. Make the second footie mirrored so the pair sits symmetrically.
For children’s footies, the author suggests inventing a decoration: a colorful pom-pom, crocheted flowers, or embroidery.
If the footies are for the sofa and home lounging, you can skip the button or bead and simply tack the corner down with thread.

The finished piece is too loose or too tight.
The 40-stitch calculation was copied without checking your own gauge and foot size.
Use the author’s example as a guide: 23 cm foot, 20 x 21 cm piece. For another size, take your own measurements and recalculate the stitches.
The side edge does not form a neat chain.
The edge stitches were not worked as described in the source.
On every row, slip the first stitch without knitting it and purl the last stitch.
Extra bulk or unevenness appears at the heel.
The stitches were not transferred alternately from the front and back needles.
Hold the two parts of the knitting parallel and alternate the stitches: one from the front needle, one from the back needle, until all 40 stitches are transferred.
The toe is skewed or the gathered area bunches up.
The yarn did not pass through the intended section of the edge, or the gathering was not evened out before securing.
Divide the edge into 3 sections of 13 stitches, pass the yarn under 26 stitches, then gather gradually and smooth the fabric before securing it.
The corner decoration presses when you sit with your feet tucked under you.
A hard, bulky decoration was chosen for home wear.
From the discussion: if bulky decoration gets in the way, secure the corner with thread only. For children’s footies, you can choose a soft pom-pom, flower, or embroidery.
The author’s example is for a 23 cm foot: the piece is 20 x 21 cm, and 21 cm equals 40 stitches in her gauge.
Use soft yarn: acrylic, wool blend, or similar soft yarn. The source uses Alize yarn, 100 g per skein.
You need No. 3 circular needles, two No. 3 double-pointed needles, a No. 2.5-3 crochet hook, and a tapestry or yarn needle.
Every row is knit, so the main piece is garter stitch, with no decreases or increases.
No. The stitches are not bound off at the end because they are used to form the heel.
No. The discussion notes that a bulky button can get in the way, so you can simply tack the corner down with thread.
