Satin Ribbon Kanzashi Chrysanthemum

Step 1

This kanzashi flower is fairly quick and easy to make; this tutorial is geared mostly toward beginners. 😉 The flower turns out lush and multi-layered, great for headbands and hairbands. 🙂

Step 2

For this project, prepare:
• 4 cm satin ribbon;
• plastic stamens;
• sharp scissors;
• a ruler;
• a needle;
• thread;
• sewing pins.

Tutorial

To start, as usual, cut the ribbon into pieces. For the chrysanthemum, you will need 5 pieces, 8 cm each.

Take one piece of ribbon and fold the first petal from it. To do this, fold one edge at an acute angle toward the wrong side, like this:

Next, turn the piece and fold the resulting triangle in half.

Fold the opposite side of the ribbon strip the exact same way: fold the corner toward the wrong side and fold it in half.

Sew stitches along the two bottom edges of the piece, pull the thread tight to gather, and secure it. Make 4 more petal pieces just like this.

Gather several plastic stamens together into a small bunch, glue the "stems" together or wrap them with thread, and secure.

Step 9

Sew all the petal pieces together one by one using basting stitches at the base. Pull the gathering tight.

Step 10

Insert the bunch of stamens into the opening in the center and stitch it tighter. Trim the length of the stamen stems. For extra hold, I would recommend additionally securing the stamens to the petals with clear silicone glue.

That's it! At this stage, you can sew on a hair tie or glue the satin ribbon flower to a hair clip. If desired, you can hide all the seams and joints with a small piece of satin. 😉
