A small practice project for working a single and double diagonal from left to right while keeping the back neat.
Use this sample before embroidering a larger ornament: first practise the direction of the stitches, then transfer the technique to the main work.
Single diagonal from left to right
Work it by alternating diagonal and cross stitches. Keep the upper stitches in the same direction and maintain even thread tension so the line stays straight.
Double diagonal from left to right
For the double chain, embroider two diagonal stitches from below, then add two opening stitches. Repeat the sequence along the line and keep the spaces between elements even.
After several rows, check the back. Transitions should be short, without long floats. This practice fragment helps catch a direction mistake early and find a comfortable thread tension.
