You can create quite a few interesting accessories from metal zippers. For example, let me show you a very unusual necklace design.

You will need several long zippers, a pair of D-rings, thread, and wide ribbon. I have 5 zippers of different lengths, but you can use however many you have. You can buy new zippers or use old ones. Several times, I bought cheap clothes at thrift stores and seam-ripped the zippers; likewise, I bought cheap bags and removed the hardware from them. Their quality is usually better than what is sold in craft stores. And if you buy on discount days, the price will be next to nothing.

Step 3

To start, you need to cut off the metal stops from the zipper. Next, trim the zipper tape as close to the teeth as possible. Seal the cut edge with a lighter to keep the fabric from fraying.

Step 4

Lay out the zippers on the table in the order they will be arranged in the finished piece.

Step 5

Form a small loop with the zipper around the D-ring and discreetly stitch it in place using matching thread. The zippers should move freely on the D-ring. The seam should be on the wrong side of the piece.

Step 6

Measure the ribbon, cut it, and seal the edge with a lighter. Sew the ribbon to the D-ring.

Step 7

You can measure how long the ribbon needs to be so the necklace sits nicely on the chest. Or you can cut two lengths of ribbon to tie in a bow in the back and adjust the length of the necklace.
