This master class shows how to knit house slippers on insoles: cut a sole from dense foam, knit the lower pieces in garter stitch, work the slipper upper with a cable pattern, knit the side strip, assemble the sole with the sidewall, and sew the upper around the edge.
BeginnerFreeThe result is a pair of warm knitted slippers with a soft foam sole, sidewall, and decorative cable upper. You can make them from leftover medium-weight yarn.
First cut an insole template from paper, then transfer it to dense foam and cut the sole. In the example, the insole is 7 cm wide at the base, 9 cm at the widest point, and 23 cm long.
Before knitting, note which stitch patterns are used in each slipper part.
The slipper upper is worked in reverse stockinette and cables. In the example, each cable uses 6 stitches: 2 purl and 4 knit stitches.
On row 5, purl 2, slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold them at the front of the work. Knit 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle.
Knit the insole and bottom of the slipper in garter stitch: knit every stitch on every row. The sidewall can be worked in garter stitch or in stripes: 2 knit rows, 2 purl rows.
The model needs 4 lower pieces that will be assembled with the sole.
Cast on 15 stitches and work 34 rows in garter stitch.
Increase on the inside edge of the foot: edge stitch, make 1 stitch from a knit stitch, then knit all stitches. Increase this way on every right-side row 4 times. You will have 19 stitches.
After the increases, work 24 rows even.
For the toe, decrease 6 times at the beginning and end of the row, after and before the edge stitch, on every right-side row. Bind off the remaining stitches.
Knit the second lower piece as a mirror image, making the increases on the opposite side.
For a pair, change the increase side so the right and left parts assemble symmetrically.
The upper and side strip define the slipper shape.
Cast on 20 stitches and work the cable pattern while widening gradually: increase 1 stitch at the beginning and end of the row 9 times. Work all increased stitches in reverse stockinette.
After the increases, work 24 more rows even and bind off all stitches.
Measure the sole length. In the example, it is 55 cm. Knit a 3 cm wide strip in garter stitch or stripes and sew it into a ring.
Now join the insole, sole, sidewall, and upper.
Sew the insole and sole to the sidewall, insert the foam, and close the opening with an invisible seam.
The foam should lie flat without folds, otherwise the sole will be uncomfortable.
Sew the upper around the slipper edge, easing it slightly as you go.
You can decorate the slippers with pompoms or sew on strips of faux fur.
Make sure the foam lies flat inside the sole, the opening is closed invisibly, and the upper is sewn symmetrically around the edge.
You can knit the slippers from several colored strands, make them melange, or use different yarns for the sole and upper.
The finished pair can be decorated with pompoms or strips of faux fur if that suits your yarn.

The right and left sole pieces look identical instead of mirrored.
The increases were made on the same side.
Knit the second piece as a mirror image and make the increases on the opposite side.
The upper does not lie smoothly around the edge.
It was sewn on without easing or was distributed unevenly.
Before the final seam, distribute the upper around the slipper edge and sew it on with slight easing.
The source gives the model for size 36.
The source states a gauge of 2.2 stitches per 1 cm.
The sole is cut from dense foam 2–3 cm thick.
